Located 2 miles north of U.S. 34 on a 5-acre tract in western Illinois in Henry County, this site commemorates the Swedish communal settlement with its five museums. Skills and crafts of colony life are demonstrated, and 16 of the buildings have been restored. Twenty-five shops include antiques, imports and handicrafts. The Bishop Hill Museum contains an outstanding collection of early American primitive paintings by Olof Krans, now recognized as one of America's foremost folk artists.
